Ourense, situated in the southeastern part of Galicia, features a distinctive ecology shaped by its temperate continental climate, mountainous terrain, and lush river valleys. The region's flora is dominated again by native species, as is commonly the case across Galicia, such as oak (Quercus robur), chestnut (Castanea sativa), and holm oak (Quercus ilex), along with a variety of shrubs, ferns, and aromatic herbs that thrive in the forests and scrublands.
Yet again, extensive eucalyptus plantations, originally introduced for commercial purposes, have disrupted local ecosystems, outcompeting native flora and causing significant biodiversity loss. Ourense's fauna includes a range of mammals such as roe deer, wild boar, and Iberian wolves, as well as a diverse array of bird species like golden eagles, goshawks, and various songbirds.
The Sil and Miño rivers, along with numerous smaller streams, are critical for aquatic life, including fish like trout and salmon, and provide essential habitats for amphibians and numerous bird species. Unique to Ourense are its hot springs, which support specialized plant communities and add to the region's ecological diversity.
