Lugo, located in the inland region of Galicia, boasts a diverse ecology characterised by its temperate maritime climate, varied topography, and extensive woodlands. The region's flora includes native trees such as oak (Quercus robur), chestnut (Castanea sativa), and birch (Betula alba), alongside an array of shrubs, ferns, and wildflowers thriving in its forests and heathlands.
As is commonly the case in Galicia, large eucalyptus plantations, initially introduced for timber and paper production, have significantly disrupted local biodiversity, outcompeting native species and altering natural ecosystems.
The numerous rivers and streams flowing through Lugo, along with its wetlands, provide crucial habitats for freshwater species, including trout and amphibians, and are vital for birdlife, offering feeding and breeding grounds.
We're always on the lookout for people to help support our people-led, not-for-profit Rewilding Galicia movement.
